Hieroglyphics

What You Need:
- Plaster of Paris
- Paint
- Various Other Art Supplies of Your Choice
What You Do:
- Pour the plaster into a cookie sheet. Let it set up and then paint it as a rock (tan or gray paint). Next break the plaster up by dropping the pan or hitting it on the counter. Give each child a piece and let them scratch or paint Hieroglyphics on it.
Salad Spinner Peacock

What You Need:
- Salad Spinner
- Coffee Filters
- Paint/Markers/Crayons
- Any other art supply you choose
What You Do:
- Let your children pick three or four colors. Put them on the coffee filter in the salad spinner. Start spinning the salad spinner and you will get a neat design on the coffee filter. Finally have your children use their filter to design their own authentic peacock form India.
Cultural Mask

What You Need:
- Cereal Boxes
- paper rolls
- tissue paper
- rolls
- Feathers
- Paint
- Any other art supply you choose
What You Do:
- Explain to your children the importance of masks in many cultures. They are used for happy occasions (births, marriage, etc), sad occasions (death), and to ward away evil spirits Show your children several different pictures of traditional masks, then let your children design their own from all the different supplies that you provided.
Buffalo Hide

What You Need:
- Paper Bags
- Paint
- Various Other Art Supplies of your choosing
What You Do:
- Talk about how the Native Americans used to tell stories and paint pictures on buffalo hides, then wrinkle paper grocery bags and let your children create their own story on the "hide" with the art materials. You Could Cut the bag into the shape of a buffalo or bear to make it more obvious what it is support to be
Piñata or Mask

What You Need:
- Balloon
- Paper-Mâché
- Tissue Paper
- Glitter, Sequins, etc
- Various Other Art Supplies of Your choosing
What You Do:
- Build a piñata
with your class. What You Need to do is blow up balloons and tape them together
in the shape of the object you're creating. Next cover the balloon with paper-mâché.
Let it dry for a few days and then stick a needle in and pop the balloon. Finally
Decorate the Balloon with tissue paper, glitter, sequins, etc.
You can also create a traditional African Mask in this manner. Use only one balloon, cover it with the paper making it much thicker on one side. Once it has dried, cut away the thinner side and you can decorate your mask.
Pinch Pots

What You Need:
- Clay
- Paint
- Various Other Art Supplies of Your Choice
What You Do:
- Use wet set clay and have your children design a small pot or other creation. Over night place the pots in cold water. The next day they will be set up and ready to paint. For added emphasis you can let your children scratch Hieroglyphics in their pots by using the blunt end of a paintbrush.
Smiley Face Necklaces

What You Need:
- Paper
- Crayons/Markers
- Noodles
- Yarn
- Glue
What You Do:

Cut out circle shapes from many different colors of paper. Encourage the children draw a face on a circle. Punch two holes near the top of the circle. Supply the children with noodles, yarn and their smiley face to make a necklace.
